Abstract

This paper is an attempt to perform a dynamic reading through diagramming space by looking at the space called ‘Susaek’ in the imagined geographies of Lee Soon-won ’s 『Susaek, its watery pattern』 . ‘Susaek’ is not simply the spatial background of the story, but the image that is strongly evoked by narrative consciousness. At the same time, it is a mediator that generates the dynamic meaning of the reading process as well as the subject consciousness of the novel. Therefore, unlike the dichotomy that divides East and West from the Daegwallyeong in the existing Lee Soon-won novels, this study uses space design as a research method in order to construct the new spatial meaning centered on Susaek. To this end, this paper will broaden the spatial diagram in two stages. The first is a direct spatial con-figuration identified in the narrative dimension of the novel. This course deals with the movement of the characters on the narrative layer, as well as the location of narratives mediated by narrative consciousness. By actively plotting the vector of spatial movements occurring in the story dimension and discourse dimension through the map, we actively examine how the novel mediates the reader’s spatial schema with the reader’s reading. In addition, this diagramming space model is sketched out and it is involved in the mentalization through the possible world theory. It visualizes and overlaps the possible world of narrative consciousness that spans several spaces in formal schematization and search series. I understand exactly how the sign “Susaek” can be expressed as a “watery pattern” In conclusion, the sign of “Susaek” that appears in the 『Susaek, its watery pattern』 series is not simply a real world or space that is used functionally in a novel, but a continuously connected and overlapping world and space. And let readers actively seek out expansion of such meaning and carry out reading. It is difficult to understand the generative meaning of the sign called ‘Susaek’ which the subject consciousness of the novel intends to secure without a positive reading on the space of 『Susaek, its watery pattern』 In this way, we try to obtain a better understanding of the spatiality of the novel by attempting a visual diagramming model of the space and the mind that models the novel. It is expected that this modeling will be an attempt to further illustrate the active narrative.
