Abstract

This study examined the narrative structure of the tales of rat’s human transformation and grasped the Doppelgänger’s element shown in the tale. Through this, the author compared folk tale and folk beliefs related to avatars in Korea and Germany. Finally, the author synthesizes the discussions and in largely, the East and the West, and in small, grasped and compared the folk World view of Korea and Germany. The above is summarized as follows. Doppelgänger is a strange phenomenon that shows itself in front of one's eyes. The tales of rat’s human transformation reveal Doppelgänger’s element. First, after eating the protagonist's fingernails, a mouse transformed into the protagonist looks exactly the same as the protagonist. So the real and the fake are in Doppelgänger's relationship with each other. Second, there is a folk belief that if you look at Doppelgänger, you will die. If you do not kill Doppelgänger, you will die. This creates a desire to kill your opponent. In the tales of rat’s human transformation, the protagonist feels afraid of losing his place to the same object as himself. These fears develop into murderous intent. The real and the fake fight at the risk of killing each other. Third, if you see your Doppelgänger, you will die. Doppelgänger threatens life just by being presence. In the tales of rat’s human transformation, the protagonist is kicked out of the house because of the rat transformed into the Doppelgänger, And suffer life to the point of being threatened. Koreans and Germans have a common superstition that contains human soul in their nails. In addition, both Koreans and Germans have a superstition that a soul in the shape of a rat comes out of the body when a person sleeps and dies if the mouse does not return to the body. As such, the folk World view in Korea and Germany is very similar.
