ウェブトゥーン翻訳の現状と課題 ‒翻訳戦略の検討と韓国語教育への応用可能性‒

Abstract

This study examines the challenges of translating Korean-origin webtoons and their potential application as language learning materials. The translation of webtoons poses significant challenges, including the accurate conveyance of linguistic precision and cultural nuances. In particular, the process of localizing culturally specific elements and emotional expressions unique to Korea for the Japanese market carries the risk of distorting the original intent. Additionally, the constraints inherent to the vertical-scroll format and the importance of visual pacing further complicate the translation process. On the other hand, webtoons, with their rich contemporary vocabulary and cultural elements, demonstrate potential as practical and engaging materials for Korean language education. Analysis of successful translation cases highlights the importance of strategies that respect cultural contexts while adapting the content to target markets. Although AI translation technologies contribute to efficiency, the findings confirm that human intervention is essential for capturing cultural subtleties and character authenticity. This study suggests that webtoons have the potential to enhance intercultural understanding and contribute to education and the cultural industries. It also emphasizes the need for further research into the practical effectiveness of using webtoons in Korean language education and the refinement of translation processes.
