Abstract

This study examines the cinematic strategies and eco-political implications of Hwang Yoon's documentary An Omnivorous Family's Dilemma (2015), exploring the ethics of multispecies coexistence in the era of global ecological crisis. Through audiovisual images of culling and factory farming sites, cross-editing of human and non-human reproductive processes, and cinematography that captures moments of affective communion between humans and non-humans, the film deterritorializes anthropocentric networks of slaughter. Against the backdrop of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and avian influenza (AI) outbreaks, the film calls for a shift from ignorance to awareness, restoring the severed link between "meat" as commodity and "life" as being. By juxtaposing the director's experiences of motherhood and caregiving with the nurturing process of a mother pig, the film reveals "trans-corporeality," wherein humans and non-humans mutually permeate each other, while simultaneously exposing the complexity of practice and raising structural issues that transcend the question of breeding methods. An Omnivorous Family's Dilemma performs acts of remembrance and mourning before the chains of violence that traverse species boundaries, appeals for "response-ability" among living beings, and seeks relational transformations not grounded in exploitation. In this way, the film stands as a significant case that illuminates the ethics of multispecies coexistence in the era of global ecological crisis.
