조류독감으로 인한 대규모 살처분은 인간과 동물 사물들에 대한 새로운 관계 설정의 필요성을 환기시켰다. 본 연구는 살처분의 복잡한 과정을 중층적이고 이질적인 ‘어셈블리지’와 그 안의 정동(affect)를 분석해, 인간-동물 관계에 어떠한 변화를야기하는지 살펴보았다. 어셈블리지는 일시적인 이질적 다양한 요소의 결합 관계를 일컫는 개념으로, 이를 통해 살처분이란 재난적 상황이 인간-동물 관계를 변화시키는 과정을 분석한다. 공장식 축산에서는 가축을 상품으로 표준화하기 위해 모든 특성을 최적화했다. 하지만 가축전염병이 발생하면서 상품화된 가축의 특성은해체되고 기존의 상품화된 인간-동물 관계 역시 변화한다. 상품화된 동물은 전체로사유되기 보다는 고기로 명명되었지만, 가축전염병이란 재난 상황은 역설적으로가축이 가지고 있는 생명체로서의 특성이 가시화된다. 살처분 어셈블리지는 전염병-방역-살처분-노동-상품화된 동물-생명으로서의 동물-정동 등으로 구성이 되며기존의 상품화된 인간-동물 관계에 균열을 내고, 가축이 단순히 고기가 아니라 살아있는 생명체라는 점을 가시화하며, 고기가 아닌 동물의 고통에 대한 관심을 환기한다.
Abstract
The large-scale culling caused by bird flu evoked the necessity of establishing a new relationship between human and animal relations. In this study, the complex process of culling was analyzed by focusing on the multi-layered and heterogeneous 'assemblage' and its affects, and examined the effects on the human-animal relationship. ‘Assemblage’ is a concept that refers to the entangled relationship of various temporary and disparate elements, and through this, it analyzes the process by which the disastrous culling of livestocks changes the human-animal relationship. In factory farming, animals have been optimized and modified for the standardization of livestocks as commodities. However, with the outbreak of the livestock epidemic, the elements of these commercialized livestocks are dismantled, and the subsequent human-animal relationship based on commodity also changes. Animals as commodities were viewed as pieces of meat rather than holistic species, but the disastrous situation of livestock epidemic paradoxically rekindles the characteristics of livestock as living organisms. The assemblage of culling is composed of infectious disease-quarantine-culling-labor-commercialized animals-animals as life-affect, while disrupting the existing commercialized human-animal relationship, and the fact that livestock is not just meat but a living organism is once again rekindled calling for response-ability to such suffering of animals.
