Abstract

This paper aims to elucidate the structure of image-thinking in which figurative language in general is situated. What is the underlying structure that makes figurative language possible? Figurative expressions unfold upon a horizontal and vertical structure of analogy and categorization. Metaphor, grounded in similarity, and synecdoche, based on systematic relations, are assigned to each axis respectively, while metonymy emerges through the intersection or transference between these two axes. The defining feature of metaphor is similarity. A metaphor associates similar objects in a coordinate relationship, and it is within this structure that the symbol (drawn toward synecdoche) appears. The defining feature of synecdoche is inclusiveness or subordination. Synecdoche arises through acts of categorization among objects, from which allegory (influenced by metaphor) is derived. The defining feature of metonymy is the syntactic reducibility. Metonymy is generated through the combination of metaphor and synecdoche within the analogical structure in which both operate. It emerges when thought obliquely traverses from one category to another. Irony emerges beyond the structure of analogy. Irony is a form of figurative language that appears paradoxically through the failure of linguistic expression. Though it marks the limit of language, it is precisely at this limit that language's expressivity reaches its peak. Parody and paradox may be considered derivatives of irony. Through the horizons of analogy and irony, we can gain a comprehensive view of the position, mechanism, and interactions of various figurative expressions.
