Abstract
This article attempts to analyze Fukushima disaster’s film from an ecological critical perspective. According to Sean Cubitt, Ecocinema suggests that it is necessary to analyze the physical and aesthetic qualities of the media that make up human sociology, which forms economic and material politics and determine experiences. In other words, we need to study not only pictorial but also all visual media (e.g., data visualization). Following this discussion, I would like to first reveal how this reproduces an anhropocentric landscape through pictorial realism in Your Name (Shinkai Makoto, 2016) and The Land of Hope (Sono Sion, 2012), one of the most popular works on the Fukushima disaster. In contrast, Surviving Internal Exposure (Kamanaka Hitomi 2011) depicts radioactive contamination of the land and nature, and the diseased bodies of humans and animals affected by it, through data visualization, unlike most Fukushima documentaries which mainly focus on the livelihood of human victims. In particular, the entanglement between director’s narration and interviews of doctors or residents and CGI, diagrams, and intertitles in this documentary suggest the possibility of thinking about the coexistence of human and non-human technologies. In addition, Zone: The life that did not exist (Naotoshi Kitada, 2013) notes the effects of radiation on non-human livestock and pets. This documentary uses a shot "Frontality" of animal, which Valentina Vitali refers to. This makes the animal not just as a victim, but as a subject with a view point. Finally, I would like to re-read each of these aesthetic strategies through one of New materialsim, Jane Bennett’s theory of ‘Vital Materialism.’ She emphasizes the relationship between humans and non-humans through the concept of Deleuze and Gattari called "assemblage". These methods resonate with the definition of Eco-cinema with ecological sensitivity that enables encounters of humans, nature, animals and technology.
