Abstract
This paper will examine the practical value of the Torah, which reveals the history of the sacred, centering on Lévinas’s the Face of the Other, which resists all violence and the logic of totality in his philosophy. I will first compare the opposing structures of the Face of the Other and totality, as revealed in Totality and Infinity, and present their opposing meanings. The Face of the Other represents the dimension of the descending nobility and the divine, and is at the center of all values that foster a higher level of humanity. In particular, the paper will note that the practice of transcendental values demanded by this Face arises from the relationship of ‘one for the other’ (l’un-pour-l’autre), which states that “no one can approach God beyond the human.” The practice of these values demands expiation before God for the other, love for the other, and responsibility for the other. Through this practice, we can advance the history of the sacred, where transcendence, justice, and salvation are ultimately realized.
