A Critical Discourse Analysis of Caricatures : the case of the image of the president in caricatures in the Kyunghyang Shinmun

A caricature is a description anda public message of an opinion, an argumental issue or a person usingexaggeration of some characteristics and oversimplification of others. So an image is created by means of conceptual similarity and contiguity,and that is based on metaphor and metonymy. The visualizationof an editorial is one of the characteristics of a caricature, and imagesimilarity is one of the key factors of a caricature. In this study, caricaturesof the president who was relatively well known were analyzedto find out how his image was depicted and framed in the KyunghyangShinmun. President Lee Myung-bak was described as immoral inassociation with corrupt images such as the images of a liar, a rubber,a swindler, or a gambler, and he was described as incompetent inassociation with irresponsible, stubborn and incompetent images andan image of laying the blame on others. He was described as unfairin terms of impartial personnel administration and pushing ahead withunfair policies, and he was described as arrogant in terms of takingcredit to himself and pretending to be omniscient and omnipotent. Overall, the image of the president was quite negative, which wasportrayed as immature, incompetent and corrupt.
