Abstract

The research aim was to compare how effectively reading contents are transmitted to students delivered through two different information media SNS and printed matter. For the sake of comparison, the following experiment research was carried out. In the experimental studies, four types of text media with different characteristics were selected as samples: <Text 1> consisted of short sentences that provided four different contents of fragmented information. <Text 2> was an article on info-graphics that contained the answer for a question about a “contrast type” of an image with a short description. <Text 3> was a long statement that provided a variety of information related to one theme and <Text 4> was a lyric with the shortest sentence consisting of only 11 lines. For the experiment, 109 Participants in four groups were randomly assigned to two groups (i.e. SNS vs. printed media) and the four reading texts. In all the four groups, those who had been assigned to read statements in the printed matter received a higher overall execution score compared to those who did so in SNS. With the advancements of science and continuous technological developments, it is undeniable that digital media have become increasingly common. However, the results of this paper suggest that reading execution of printed matter is more useful than SNS for knowledge and information acquisition, although the young “digitally native” generation is more accustomed to using mobile devices and the Internet that using printed matter.
