이 연구에서는 디지털 매체의 영향에 대한 국내외의 선행 연구를 바탕으로 디지털 읽기가 21세기 독자들의 독해 과정에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 분석하였다. 첫째, 인쇄 텍스트와 달리 디지털 텍스트는 가변성, 비선형성, 상호작용성, 멀티미디어성이라는 특성을 지닌다. 이러한 디지털 텍스트의 이러한 특성은 독자의 읽기 방식에도 영향을 미칠 것으로 보인다. 둘째, 인쇄물과 스크린 환경에서의 읽기 효과에 대한 비교 연구를 보면 핵심적인 개념을 파악하는 데는 두 매체 간의 차이가 없었으나 세부 내용을 기억하고 회상하는 데는 차이가 있었다. 학생들은 스크린보다 인쇄 매체 환경에서 더 높은 읽기 성취를 보였다. 셋째, 디지털 매체 읽기에서 나타나는 지배적인 읽기 방식은 훑어 읽기이다. 이러한 읽기 방식은 다양한 정보들 중에서 필요한 정보를 찾아내는 데는 유리하지만 깊이 읽고 통찰력을 얻는 데는 불리할 수 있다. 디지털 시대에는 다양한 정보를 효과적으로 읽을 수 있는 능력과 함께 텍스트를 깊이 있게 읽어내는 기술 또한 필요하다. 미래 세대의 유능한 독자가 되기 위해서는 디지털 매체와 인쇄 매체의 장점을 두루 활용할 수 있는 능력을 갖추어야 한다.
Abstract
This study analyzed previous studies on the influence of digital media and analyzed how digital reading affects reading comprehension of readers of the 21st century. First, unlike printed texts, digital texts have characteristics of variability, nonlinearity, interactivity, and multimedia. These characteristics are likely to affect the way readers read. Second, a comparative study on the effects of reading environments, such as the printed reading one or on screen reading one, showed that there was no difference between the two media in terms of readers’ grasping key concepts. However, there was a difference in their remembering and recalling details. Students in the reading environment with the printed media showed higher reading achievement than those in the one with the screen media. Third, the dominant reading pattern in digital reading is the skimming. Skimming is useful for finding necessary information among various pieces of information. However, it is not an effective method when students need to read deeply to gain insights. In a digital age, an ability to read a variety of information effectively, and at the same time, skills of reading texts in depth are required. Readers in future generations must have an ability to take advantage of both digital and printed media.
