Howard와 Le Corbusier는 20세기 초반의 대표적인 도시계획가로서 이들의 사상과 도시계획을 본 연구에서 비교하였다. Le Corbusier는 건축가로서의 명성이 더 높았던 인물로서 파리를 중심으로 활동하였고 파리 도심부를 새롭게 재건설할 도시계획안을 발표하였다. 또한 세계 각국의 도시의 계획을 진행하였고, 그 중 인도 펀잡주의 찬디가르계획을 실현하였다. Howard는 영국에서 전원도시계획을 발표하고 이를 실제 도시계획으로 적용하였다. Howard의 도시계획은 다양하게 연구가 진행되어왔다. 하지만 Le Corbusier의 도시계획에 대한 연구는 찾아보기 힘들다. 이 두 사람의 도시계획은 수평적 도시계획과 수직적 도시계획으로 구분될 수 있으며, 그 결과 경관에서 많은 차이점을 나타내고 있다. 현대 도시에서의 수직적 형태의 도시구조에 영향을 미친 Le Corbusier의 도시계획에 대한 지리학적 고찰이 필요하다.
Abstract
This study focuses on the comparison of the ideas and urban planning of Le Corbusier and E. Howard as urban planners in the early 20th century. Le Corbusier who received his fame as an architect displayed his efforts centering on Paris and also stated a new urban planning for renewing central Paris, while Howard presented the garden city planning and applied it in real world. Performing urban planning of several cities around the world, Le Corbusier realized his ideas through Chandigarh planning in India. Although there were diverse researches on Howard's urban planning in geography, the study of Le Corbusier's ideas is rarely found in geography. The urban planning that both researchers performed can largely be divided into horizontal and vertical planning, and also reveals their difference in landscape. Le Corbusier's urban planning that has largely influenced on vertical form of modern cities needs to be further studied in geographical perspective.
