Abstract
This article reflect on urban planning of the western world sinceindustrial revolution, and assess the prospect for a humanistic city ofthe future. The urban conditions brought by industrial revolution wereextremely poor, and all kinds of social problems began to prevail. Inresponse to this, the utopian socialists in the first half of the 19thcentury tested a small-scale, ideal community where production, housing, and leisure activities were all combined. Their model forco-housing and living facilities had a tremendous influence on urbanplanning when it came to form. Yet, their pursuit of humanisticcommunity and search for alternatives to a capitalistic society did notseriously affect the next urban planning. Haussmannisation of Paris during the mid-19th centurytransformed Paris into a modern city by straight avenues, improvingwater supply and sewer system, securing greens paces, andconstructing historic monuments. On the other hand, the project led tosocial segregation of urban spaces, increasing profits of propertyowners, and strengthening of ruling power through spectacular view ofthe city. International Style of Modern Architectled by Le Corbusierand Bauhaus architectsin 1920’s and1 930’s put emphasis on thefunctionality of construction and urban spaces. They minimized thesignificance of historical tradition and cultural heritage, and made thefunctionalistic modern urban planning widespread all over the world. Post-modern urban planners have criticized such a functionalisticapproach since the mid-20th century. The Urban Renewal projectpromoted at a time of neoliberal globalization in the late 20th centuryhas overcome the limitations of modern city’s functionalism, but theinfluence of capital is getting stronger. The humanistic future city can be realized by lessening socialdisparity, expanding public services and cultural spaces, combiningenvironmental-friendliness with sustainable growth, guaranteeingcitizen’s participation, preserving and utilizing historic and culturalheritage. To that end, academic and social participation of scholars inUrban Humanities needs to be more active.
