Abstract
The paper examines the contemporary issues in the study of marriage migration with particular focus on the agency of women. The feminist critiques on so called ?ail-order brides?contributed to raising awareness on the commercialization of women and marriage, thereby called for the policy provision to protect these women. However, they tended to produce a dichotomy in which migrant women are represented as victims of globalization, while men as winner in transnational marriages. Under this dichotomy, women continued to remaining as ?he marginalized others.?The recent approach to the agency, however, attempts to overcome the dichotomy and to empower these women. It suggests that transnational marriages become a new way of producing intimacy and families in the ?lobal ecumene,?and an alternative to the patriarchal marriage system in the home countries. Many women choose to cross borders either as laborers or brides, which characterizes the feminization of migration. I suggest that the future study of marriage migration need to include more research on the role of states that shape and control the transnational marriages, and on the agency of male spouses, particularly on the changes in their social location and the construction of new masculinities.
