Abstract
Feminization of migration increasingly characterizes transnational migration since 1990s. Recently female transnational marriage migrants from developing countries become a significant minority group in Korean society. The paper investigates the mobility of these women as their establishment process in local society. Mobility refers to the ability to overcome material space, which is supported by geographical imaginations. It organizes everyday life and shows power relations among involved actors. This research examines various factors that limit mobility and create differences among migrant women in Boeun and Yangpyeong, utilizing intensive interviews, survey and participant observations. It also shows the ability to move across material space influences the scope of geographical imaginations and vice versa. The paper emphasizes diverse strategies that the women employ to overcome the limitation in mobility, thereby highlights these women as active agents rather than passive subjects. The theoretical framework combines feminist urban studies that investigate gendered mobility in commuting patterns and feminist migration studies that argues migration as gendered processes and women as key agents of such processes. The investigation of female marriage migrants can be used as a useful source to understand everyday lives of these women in the local contexts and their identity formation. It also suggests regional development accommodate the needs of the group that has limited mobility.
