Abstract
From an agency perspective, this study scrutinizes the impact of control-ownership disparity on fixed asset investment, using a panel sample of large business conglomerates in Korea. The study finds that control-ownership disparity does not have a significant effect on fixed asset investment, whereas firms with low growth opportunities have a relation between control-ownership disparity and fixed asset investment. Further, a significantly positive relationship does exist for low-growth firms with high cash flows. The empirical findings of this paper imply that controlling shareholders with high control rights and low cashflow rights are likely to seek private interest by increasing firm size rather than maximizing firm value. This results provide a further evidence for Jensen's 'free cash flow' hypothesis, suggesting that the investment policy of large business conglomerates in Korea may not be optimal but distorted by agency costs of controlling shareholders.
