Abstract

This paper offers a critical review on the denationalized spatiality in the discourse of global cities. Genealogy of such knowledge traces back to the ‘world city’ and ‘global city’ hypotheses, and denationalization is also presumed at influential ‘centers of calculation’ forming and disseminating global city knowledge, such as Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) and Global Financial Centre Index (GFCI). Paradoxically, however, we can find noticeable clues on the state spatiality of global cities in recent GaWC and GFCI analysis outcomes, such as the national orientation of global city ‘subnets’ and the influence of national economy on GFCI scores and rankings. State spatiality is also found to matter in inter-city relations among financial centers within a national territory. These findings suggest, the state should be regarded as an important dimension in the understanding of global cities, but existing literature pays sole attention to developmental and/or authoritarian states on that matter. Against this background, we argue, varieties of capitalism literature on the nationally differentiated institutional embeddedness offers a useful insight, which can be utilized for a broader understanding on the role of states in the global city formation and development.
