본고는 노르망디의 몽생미셸이 고립이라는 지형적 특성, 수도원이라는 종교적 특성, 백년전쟁을 통한 요새와 감옥의 특성, 관광지로서의 특성이라는 복합적 장소성이 여타의 장소와 차별화된 것으로 보고, 이곳을 연구대상으로 하여 장소성의 형성과 변화를 분석하였다. 이를 통해 몽생미셸은 신성공간임과 동시에 역사와 시대를 반영하는 장소로서의 역할을 수행해 왔음을 알 수 있다. 따라서 본고는 장소성이라는 지리학의 고전연구와 경관의 기호학적 연구를 결합하여 해석함으로써 이 장소를 하나의 사례로서 제시하고, 장소를 지배한 주체와 권력에 따라 장소성이 변화됨을 증명하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
Abstract
This paper assumed that Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy was differentiated from other locations due to its multiple placenesses; geographical features as ‘isolation’; religious features as a ‘monastery’; features of a fortress and jail used during the Hundred Years’ War; and features as a tourist site. Thus, this paper analyzed the formation and changes of the placeness. The analysis found that Mont Saint-Michel played roles reflecting the history and the times and as a sacred space simultaneously. Accordingly, the analysis results of this paper are significant in that this paper suggests the placeness of Mont Saint-Michel, combining the study of classics as geography and semiotic study on the landscape and then analyzes the placeness and verified the change of placeness depending on the subject and the powers dominating the location.
