Abstract

Little is known about how business group (chaebol) affiliation affects CEO turnover although many Korean firms belong to chaebols. This study examines the relationships among firm performance, CEO power, and CEO turnover as well as the moderating effects of chaebol for those relationships, based on a sample of Korean public firms during the 2001-2007 period. Our results show that firm performance and CEO power are negatively related to the likelihood of CEO turnover, respectively. We also find that the effect of chaebol affiliation on the relationship between firm performance and CEO turnover is insignificant. In addition, we find that the extent to which CEO power is negatively associated with CEO turnover is lower in chaebol-affiliated firms than in stand-alone firms. Our findings imply that chaebols contributes to decreases in CEO power within the firm.
