Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze Korean pronunciation errors that appear in the spontaneous speech of Vietnamese advanced Korean learners. The results of analyzing the spontaneous speech of 30 Vietnamese Korean learners for phoneme errors and phonological rule errors are as follows: All of the advanced Vietnamese learners who participated in the experiment showed errors in distinguishing three phonation types(lax, tense and aspirated) in initial consonants and in the liaison. The error in distinguishing the phonation type of initial consonants is a common high-frequency error among learners of all languages, regardless of the language. In the case of Vietnamese learners, errors are especially observed in lax consonants, where lax and tense are confused in stops and fricatives, and lax and aspirated are confused in affricates. In the liaison, errors of not applying liaison occurred at a high-frequency in all subjects due to the influence of the Vietnamese, which speaks in syllable units. Next, the error of replacing the final consonant /l/ with [n] and errors in the diphthong /yʌ/ appeared in most Vietnamese learners. This is also due to the fact that /l/ is not realized as a final consonant in Vietnamese, and the list and realization aspect of diphthongs are different from Korean. In addition, errors in the monopthong /ʌ/ and errors in phonological rules such as tensification and aspiration are observed in many Vietnamese learners. Phonological phenomena such as tensification and aspiration are largely related to the characteristics of pronunciation exactly as written, just like the liaison. Although this study targeted advanced learners with high proficiency, many errors in Korean pronunciation are observed, showing that pronunciation education needs to be continued. In addition, by analyzing pronunciation errors in the spontaneous speech similar to actual communication conditions, it is possible to identify what needs to be focused on in pronunciation education for Vietnamese learners.
