This research investigates the role of the Korean degree adverb ‘twege’ as a discourse marker, which has previously been understudied. Analyzing data from the Korean Corpus of Spontaneous Speech, the current study found out that approximately 7% of ‘twege’ instances function as a discourse marker. This usage is more prevalent among teenagers and female speakers than other demographic groups. This study highlights three primary functions of ‘twege’ as a discourse marker: (i) as a cognitive tool for speakers to pause and organize thoughts, often appearing alongside other discourse markers or standalone within an Intonational Phrase, where ‘twege’ and adjacent pauses are notably prolonged; (ii) as a means to amplify the intended meaning of a statement, extending its original lexical meaning; and (iii) as a device for adding further detailed information after an initial statement. Additionally, females are more inclined to use ‘twege’ for meaning amplification, as they demonstrate a higher overall usage of ‘twege’ as a degree adverb compared to males. This study is pioneering in demonstrating ‘twege’s transition from a degree adverb to a discourse marker, a shift primarily led by teenage and female speakers.
