Abstract

This study analyzes the realization forms, meanings, and functions of geudaeum in written and spoken discourse. In written discourse, the form ‘geudaeum + noun’ occurs frequently. In contrast, in spoken discourse, the form geudaeume (geudaeum + particle ‘e’) is used frequently, and the abbreviated form geudame also appears often. It is commonly used for micro–level connections that link clauses in written discourse. On the other hand, in spoken language, it is primarily used for macro–level connections, often linking units of discourse at the topic level. In written discourse, a sequential arrangement appears where the basic meaning follows in order. In spoken discourse, there is a frequent occurrence of an equivalent arrangement where equal content follows, as well as a simple arrangement where unrelated content follows. In written discourse, it functions in terms of ‘discourse organization,’ such as developing or changing the topic. In spoken language, in addition to its role in ‘discourse organization,’ it also serves the function of ‘maintaining utterance,’ such as buying time. Considering that these changes in spoken discourse primarily appear in the form of geudaeume, it can be regarded as a discourse marker.
