The purpose of this paper is to examine the usage of adverbs of degree for emphasis in spoken Korean, which depends on sociolinguistic factors such as age and gender of speaker, personal relationships with hearer, and utterance situation. Firstly, this paper conducted a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) survey of 100 men and women over the age of 10, and as a result, the most commonly used adverb of degree was ‘neomu (너무)’. This paper then compared the influence of the above four sociolinguistic factors through the Goldvarb analysis. The results of the analysis show that utterance situation and personal relationships with hearer have a great influence, and age and gender of speaker have a relatively small effect. Finally, the usage of various adverbs of degree is examined by sociolinguistic factors. While the most commonly used adverb in positive situations is ‘jinjja (진짜)’, the most often used adverb in negative situations is ‘neomu’. In friendly relationships, the use of slang expressions such as ‘jonna(존나)’ and ‘gae(개)’ increased.
