이 글은 1920년대 식민지 조선에서 프랭클린 『자서전』이 자기계발 서적의 하나로서 번역되는 맥락과 그 의미를 당대 기독교의 사회적 존재방식과 관련시켜규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이러한 작업을 위해 먼저 기독교의 역사에 나타난자기계발의 계보와 근현대 한국사회의 자기계발 담론을 검토한다. 그리고 18세기 미국사회에서 프랭클린의 『자서전』이 어떠한 사회문화적 위상을 지니고 있었는지를 당시 미국 기독교의 성격과 관련하여 살핀다. 다음에는 1920년대 식민지조선에서 프랭클린의 『자서전』이 기독교 지식인에 의해 번역되는 과정과 그 의미를 ‘자조’와 ‘공조’의 관계 구도 속에서 검토한다. 이를 통해 식민지 시기 기독교의 공간에서 등장한 자기계발은 오늘날과 같은 신자유주의 시대의 자기계발 붐과는 상당히 다른 사회문화적 위상과 의미를 지니고 있었음을 밝힌다.
Abstract
This paper aims to explore the meanings and effects of translation of the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, one of the most popular self-help books, in Korea in the 1920s. First, the paper examines the genealogy of self-help tradition in Christianity as well as the history of the self-help movement in modern Korea. Second, the paper investigates the historical background and social meaning of emergence of the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin in colonial America of the 18th century. Third, the paper explores the social context and meaning of the translation of the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin in colonial Korea of the 1920s. This exploration of self-help discourse and self-help culture in Korea in the 1920s could be a channel for critical review of self-help boom in recent Korean protestantism.
