이 논문에서는 부커 워싱턴의 자서전의 식민지 조선 수용 배경과 한국적 수용 양상을 중심으로, 부커 워싱턴과 자서전이 식민지 조선에서 갖는 의미를 살펴본다. 당대 미국에서 이중적으로 평가되었는 워싱턴 자서전이 식민지 조선에 기독교를 매개체로 수용되는 과정에서는 백인 주류 문화의 평가, 즉 워싱턴의 성공 신화, 모범적 흑인 지도자의 서사가 우선시 된다. 그러나 그 전체적인 신화 안에는, 흑인 노예제도의 실상을 전하는 목적과 더불어, 터스키기학교의 실용적 교육과 농촌 사업의 모범 사례의 소개라는 실용적 가치가 자서전 번역의 주된 목적이었다. 워싱턴 자서전이 수용되는 배경에는, 식민지 조선의 상황에 따른 선택과 배제의 원칙에 따라 워싱턴 자서전을 수용하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 워싱턴의 삶과 자서전이 워싱턴의 인종적 고양과 자립을 위한 전략이 아프리카계 미국인 경험의 특수성에 뿌리를 두고 있지만, 해방의 길을 모색하는 식민지 조선의 상황에 공감을 얻을 수 있는 요소들이 결합 되었던 것이다. 이러한 방식은 워싱턴을 둘러싼 흑인 문제에 대한 다양한 입장과 시각이 혼재되어 있는데, 이것은 흑인 운동, 흑인 문학과 식민지 조선의 상황이 결합하면서 생기는 상호 연결성의 지점들이 단선적이지 않다는 것을 방증한다. 사실상 식민지 조선에서는 조선의 식민지 상황 앞에 놓인 사회적 정치적 도전 과제들 앞에서 워싱턴의 자서전을 수용하고 재구성하여 독해하고 있는 것이다.
Abstract
This paper explores the impact of Booker T. Washington and his autobiography on colonial Korea, with a particular focus on its reception in early modern Korea. In America, Washington's autobiography received mixed reviews, celebrated by the white mainstream culture primarily as a myth of his success and as a narrative showcasing an exemplary black leader. However, Washington's life story and his strategies for racial upliftment and self-reliance, deeply rooted in the African American experience, also found resonance in the unique context of colonial Korea, where there was an ongoing search for emancipation. This study reveals that the reception of Washington's work in Korea was not straightforward but complex, involving selective adaptation and reconfiguration to address the social and political challenges of the time. By examining the diverse perspectives and positions on black issues related to Washington, this paper demonstrates that the intersections between the black movement, black literature, and colonial Korea's situation are multifaceted rather than linear, reflecting a nuanced engagement with his autobiography in colonial Korea.
