Abstract
In the early modern times, Franklin's Autobiography was translated quite quickly in Korea, China and Japan, considering the publishing time of a complete original text in America. And the translations in three countries attracted public attention from intellectuals and young people. Therefore, these translation situations can allow for comparative studies of each translation through examining the cultural backgrounds and different standpoints of translations in three countries. In this sense, this paper primarily aims to study the Korean translation as a preparatory research for the comparative study. Section 2 investigates the complicated publication process of many different printings of Autobiography in 18th and 19th century America, and analyzes the cultural and social meanings of the mythicization of Franklin as 'the first great American' and a prime example of a self-made man. In Section 3 and 4, this paper examines several Korean materials that dealt with Franklin and his works in the early 20th century. This paper also catches the cultural and political meanings of the most typical Korean translation which was published by Han Sung Publishing House, analyzing the publisher, Jang Do-bin's foreword and the translator, Kim Eok's postscript.
