초록

This study examines the usage of ireoke ‘like this’ and geureoke ‘like that’ as quotation markers in spoken language. It analyzes how ireoke and geureoke are used in place of quotation markers to incorporate others' speech or one's own thoughts into the current conversation, and explores their functions within spoken discourse. Among ireoke and geureoke, ireoke is used more frequently as a quotation marker than geureoke. While there is a higher tendency to replace direct quotation markers rather than indirect ones, the difference is not significant. These markers are more commonly found outside of intonation units than within them. The quotation verbs primarily used include yaegihada ‘to say’, saenggakada ‘to think’, and hada ‘to do’. In spoken language, the quotation markers ireoke and geureoke serve to enhance the realism of the information or ensure its objectivity. The marker ireoke is used to assert the speaker's own claim or to soften negative expressions, thereby expressing politeness. Both ireoke and geureoke function to embrace preceding statements in the flow of discourse. Additionally, from the perspective of real-time conversation, these markers are employed to link temporarily interrupted speech or to maintain the continuity of discourse. In the use of ireoke and geureoke as quotation markers, ireoke, which is closer to the speaker, is used more frequently than geureoke, which is closer to the listener. This is related to the function of the speaker consolidating their own utterance into a single quoted statement and then connecting it with the quotation verb. This role contributes to organizing and maintaining the speaker's discourse in real-time conversational situations.
