Abstract
The Republic of Mali in Western Africa is a country located south of the Sahara Desert. The Mali is a community of various races, including the Bambara, the Bozo, the Dogon, etc. On the other hand, many ethnic groups in Mali have moved to Burkina Faso and Niger due to frequent bloody wars caused by ethnic conflicts. The Mali is a country that flourished greatly around the Mali dynasty and is also a place with place with many primitive religions as blooming a culture of homogeneity of tribal societies. As you can see the indigenous belief based on Shamanism all over the African continent, the Mali also emphasizes its relationship with the Divine Spirit through statues. Each tribe in the Mali has a tradition of divination, sorcery, fortune telling along with ancestor worship. This society has a common practice of polygamy and forms a paternal or clan-oriented community. Among the religious rituals of the Dogon people, statue is a representative example of ancestor worship, having their own value system and worldview in the meaning and symbol of the statues. Through the examination of 10 representative statues of the Dogon people, this study was able to confirm their mental world and value system, and confirm that the statues symbolically represent the norms, order and faith of their society. The statues of the Dogons show various meanings and symbols, especially the communication system between God and person and between person and person. This communication system is a cultural phenomenon that effectively shows the society, economy, politics, and culture associated with human life, while at the same time showings that religious forms and actions are systematic. However, a comprehensive interpretation of the statues of the Dogon people recognizes the need to approach them a variety of ways rather than in a simple approach, given that they form a theory of unique symbolic systems of the Dogon people and reveal the complementarity between the synchronic and diachronic system of knowledge.
