Abstract
A premier methodology of classical anthropology, the study of the other, has long been a subject of bitterly scholarly debates. As it had been exclusively accepted as the unique methodology among anthropologists, the study of the other has enjoyed its dominant position among Western scholarship. Designating the other in a particular manner, so called ‘traditional tribe’, Western anthropologists have consciously and unconsciously ‘altered’ the nature of the other by posturing it into the opposite side of Western civilisation. Archie Mafeje’s vehement criticism came against this methodological failure by blaming it as Western anthropologists’ “mark of false consciousness” (Mafeje 1971:2 59). According to him, altering African people and society as passive and subjugated being are the false-reflection of African reality. Instead Archie Mafeje argues that the reflection of historical and social contexts of African reality must be taken into consideration in the study of anthropology. Pursuing the endogeneity, for Archie Mafeje, is the alternative methodology of Western domination of anthropological study.
