Abstract
This study examines 《Mongoyuhae(蒙語類解)》, one of the significant Mongolian language materials published by the Bureau of Interpreters (司譯院) in the 18th century during the Joseon Dynasty, alongside 《Mongeonogeoldae(蒙語老乞大)》 and 《Cheophaemongeo(捷解蒙語)》. 《Mongoyuhae(蒙語類解)》 is a trilingual lexicon containing Korean, Mongolian, and Chinese equivalents and has been regarded as an essential historical resource reflecting the linguistic landscape of its time. Previous studies have extensively analyzed it from historical and linguistic perspectives, focusing on phonological, morphological, and syntactic features. However, discussions from the standpoint of modern phonological change remain insufficient. As a native speaker of Mongolian, I aim to examine whether phonological changes occurred in 18th-century Mongolian consonants by analyzing 《Mongoyuhae(蒙語類解)》 and exploring their relationship with phonological shifts in Modern Traditional Mongolian. Specifically, this study focuses on the transcription of Mongolian words in Hangul, particularly in cases where the consonants ㅅ(s) and ㄷ(t) are followed by ㅎ(h). The analysis reveals that ㅎ is transcribed in two forms: ㅎ and ㅋ(k), which can be categorized into four types: (1) ㅎ following ㅅ, (2) ㅋ following ㅅ, (3) ㅎ following ㄷ, (4) ㅋ following ㄷ, and (5) ㄱ following ‘ㅅ, ㄷ’ . The findings indicate that ㅎ following ㅅ or ㄷ in 《Mongoyuhae(蒙語類解)》 corresponds to the pronunciation [ɡ] in Modern Traditional Mongolian.
