Abstract
Afrophobia in South Africa reached at a worrisome level. Afrophobia, presumably happened around 1994, took Makwerekwere, a derogatory neologism for ‘African’ foreigners, as soft targets for the violence. This terroristic activities got into full swings especially in the 2000s. In this paper, I have tried to examine Afrophobia in South Africa by interpreting number of causes. The paper begins with the introduction of two surveys on South African immigration projects. Majority of the survey respondents expressed negative attitudes towards African foreigners and demanded a complete ban and strict restrictions on their entry. South Africans distrusted African foreigners for their mischievous behaviours, such as, all kind of criminal activities, trafficing drugs and even human beings, and bringing all kinds of diseases into South Africa. Obviously these suspicions are groundless. In order to examine the causes of Afrophobia and Makwerekwere, in this paper, I examine some extrinsic (economic instability, political propaganda of South African influencers, the circulation of negative image of Makwerekwere on the media) and intrinsic causes (internalization of the history of racism). In conclusion, in this paper, I draw out some extrinsic causes for Afrophobia and pointed out ‘South African exceptionalism’ as an intrinsic cause for Afrophobia.
