Abstract

Assessing on the correlates of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, it is noteworthy how most studies have emphasized relative deprivation as critical causes of such xenophobic attacks. Yet, the coherent understanding of what factors drive South African men and women to oppose the influx of more newcomers from Africa are still poorly understood. Concerns about unprecedented challenges from xenophobia in South African society continue to attract considerable attention but relatively little research has been done on South African attitudes toward the influx of newcomers from Africa. This article attempts to address this question by exploring 2011 “South Africa Afrobarometer” survey data. Using empirical analysis, I examine the determinants of anti-immigrant attitudes and find that the level of labor skill, economic distress, and threat perceptions are primary factors influencing xenophobia. Specifically, this analysis suggests that stress over job competition and economic distress drive anti-immigration attitudes when it comes to the influx of low skilled immigrants. Second, perceived symbolic threats increase xenophobic attitudes towards newcomers from African countries.
