본 연구는 AI 기반 ASSURE 모델을 스와힐리어 번역 교육에 적용하여 학습자 중심의 교수학습 방법을 탐구하고, 교육적 효과와 시사점을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 연구는 경기도 소재 H대학교의 스와힐리어 전공 학부생 9명을 대상으로 진행되었으며, ChatGPT와 Gemini 등 AI 번역 도구를 활용한 번역 과제를 수행하는 질적 사례 연구로 설계되었다. 연구 과정은 ASSURE 모델의 6단계를 적용하여 학습자 분석, 목표 설정, 매체 선정 및 활용, 학습자 참여 유도, 평가 및 수정의 체계적 단계를 통해 진행되었다. 연구 결과, AI 기반 스와힐리어 번역 교육은 번역 능력, 문법 이해력, 어휘력 등 학습자들의 언어 능력 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤으며, 번역 속도와 효율성 증진, 학습 동기 부여에서도 유의미한 결과를 보였다. 특히 ChatGPT는 번역 초안을 신속히 제공하고, 번역 과정을 지원하는 데 유용한 도구로 평가되었다. AI 도구와 ASSURE 모델의 통합은 학습자의 번역역량 증진에 효과적이며 학습 효율성을 높였다. 그러나 AI 도구는 복잡한 구문, 문화적 맥락, 관용적 표현, 줄임말 및 신조어 번역에서 한계를 보였으며, 이는 스와힐리어와 같은 자원 부족 특수외국어에서 더욱 두드러졌다. 본 연구는 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위해 AI와 인간 교수자의 협력 모델 개발, 특수외국어 데이터베이스 확충, AI 활용 교육과정의 정교화를 교육적 활용성을 극대화할 필요가 있음을 제언하였다. 또한, 본 연구는 특수외국어 교육 현장에서 AI 기반 교수학습 방법의 가능성과 학술적 가치를 탐색하는 데 기여하였다.
Abstract
This study aimed to explore learner-centered instructional methods and analyze the educational effects and implications of applying the AI-based ASSURE model to Swahili translation education. The research was conducted as a qualitative case study involving nine undergraduate students majoring in Swahili at H University in Gyeonggi Province. The participants completed translation tasks using AI translation tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini. The study followed the systematic stages of the ASSURE model, including analyzing learners, stating objectives, selecting and utilizing media and materials, requiring learner participation, and evaluating and revising. The findings revealed that AI-based Swahili translation education positively impacted learners’ translation skills, grammatical understanding, and vocabulary acquisition. It also significantly enhanced translation speed, efficiency, and learning motivation. In particular, ChatGPT was highly evaluated as a useful tool for providing quick drafts and supporting the translation process. The integration of AI tools and the ASSURE model proved effective in improving learners’ translation competence and increasing learning efficiency. However, limitations were observed in translating complex structures, cultural contexts, idiomatic expressions, abbreviations, and neologisms, challenges that are more pronounced in resource-scarce languages like Swahili. To address these limitations, the study suggests developing collaborative models between AI tools and human instructors, expanding databases for resource-constrained languages, and refining AI-integrated curricula to maximize educational utility. This study contributes to exploring the potential and academic value of AI-based instructional methods in the field of critical foreign language education.
