Abstract
This study explored the educational potential and limitations of AI-based translation tools, such as Papago, by comparing and analyzing the translations of learners who used them as supplementary tools in a Japanese literature translation class with the corrected translations of their instructors. The analysis confirmed that the AI translator made a range of errors, including literal translations, awkward phrasing, and incorrect vocabulary choices, in terms of grammar, vocabulary, and expression. While the learner was able to correct some of these issues, the translator still struggled with conveying context and emotional nuances. In contrast, the instructor's revised version was well-suited to the context and presented in a natural and fluent manner, demonstrating a high level of completion in literary translation. This process suggests that activities aimed at recognizing and supplementing the shortcomings of translation tools are effective in improving learners' translation skills, and demonstrates that the feedback and intervention of instructors play a key role. Through this class case study, we confirmed that AI-based translation tools can be used as educational aids beyond automatic translation tools, but that strategic lesson design and active intervention by instructors are necessary to supplement the errors and limitations of machine translation.
