Abstract

This article studied the basic original text of the Middle and Late period records of the Samguksagi Sillabongi and its revising progress. The editor of Samguksagi composed the basic structure of the Middle and Late period records by appropriately editing and revising records of the Old samguksa. Most of records of King Taejong-muyeol, Munmu, Sinmun and Hyoso are estimated to be quoted from the Old samguksa. From the period of King Seongdeok to Hyegong as interchange between Silla and Tang became active many articles about the dispatch of envoys and the records about emissary has been recorded in Cefu yuanchi, the editor of Samguksagi can be indicated that he extracted most of these documents from it and insert those documents to Sillabongi. Although the interchange between Silla and Tang has been active the unstability of state of China made the state of Silla in the Late period be less reflected to Chinese documents than the state of Silla in the Middle period, for this reason the editor of Samguksagi included the record about solar eclipse from Chinese documents in addition to the records about the dispatch of envoys and emissary. Meanwhile, many articles can be found in Sillabongi that were additionally quoted from Yeoljeon(Biographies), Jabji(Miscellanies), and articles of Choi Chiweon before the foundation of Goryeo dynasty, and from Taejosillok of Goryeo after it. The editor of Samguksagi is ascertained to complete the record of the Middle and Late period by editing in new documents and explain complementally about different transcription of names of people and lands and specific topics, and included reference data in the form of comment, questioning about errors and facts hard to understand in Chinese documents, and expressed their criticism based on the editor’s view of history.
