Abstract

This paper examines the original texts and compilation of Silla figures’s Biography(Yeoljeon) in Samguksagi. The Geodo-Yeoljeon and entire or part of the records of Isabu-Yeoljeon were originally from Gyelimjabjeon(鷄林雜傳), while the records of Baekgyeolseonsaeng-Yeoljeon seem to had been newly compiled based on the records of Akbon(樂本). Further, the biographies of Seokuro·Mulgyeoja·Park Jesang, who lived in the Early Ancient Period(上古期), were based on the sources of roots different from ones that the compiler of Guksa(國史) referred to. The original texts of Sadaham·Gwanchang·Kimheumoon-Yeoljeon were originally from Hwarangsegi(花郞世 記), Binnyeongja-Yeoljeon from Kimyusin-Haengrok(金庾信行錄), and the biographies of other people, lived in the Middle Ancient Period, originated from the passed down materials that compiled each person’s life. While the authors of Samguksagi Bongi wrote the book by summarizing or making excerpts from these original texts or biographies, they did not actively utilize the records from Sillabongi(新羅本紀) when they were compiling Yeoljeon. The authors of Samguksagi Biography wrote Seolchong-Yeoljeon by referring to Kim Daemun’s Gyelimjabjeon along with the passed on materials about Seol Chong and his son Seol Jungeop. When they were compiling Choichiwon-Yeoljeon, they utilized domestic and international records related to Choi Chiwon like Sangtaesasijungjang(上太師侍中狀), or Yemunji(藝文志) in Xintangshu. The author of Samguksagi Biography wrote the Jangbogo-Yeoljeon from Beoncheonmunjip(樊川文集) as its original texts, and also referred to the records related to Jang Bogo in Xintangshu. In addition, Kangsoo-Yeoljeon and the rest of the characters, who lived in the Mid-Later Silla Period, were written with passed down records compiling each person’s life as its original texts. It should be noted that the original texts of Kiminmun·Kimyang-Yeoljeon were passed down records which had features of haengjang(行狀: records of a dead person’s life). In writing Sillabongi the authors of Samguksagi barely had not been utilized Yeoljeon of characters lived in the Mid-Later Silla Period or its original texts. Further, even when a person’s life was described in detail in Sillabongi, the authors of Biography did not resister the person in Yeoljeon, based on the records of Sillabongi.
