Abstract

This study examines the characteristics of Salimbene di Adam's understanding and description of the Crusades in his Cronica. Although Salimbene mentions and records various Crusade movements in the thirteenth century, including King Louis IX of France's Crusade towards the Holy Land in the Eastern Mediterranean region, he sometimes omits certain Crusade movements or provides inaccurate accounts of Crusade movements toward the Holy Land. Salimbene was heavily influenced by Gioacchino da Fiore and his followers, which explains why his chronicle does not give much attention to the Crusades to the Holy Land against Muslims. Gioacchino da Fiore and his followers were more interested in the emergence of the Antichrist in Christendom in Europe than in the Crusades to the Holy Land. Salimbene also exhibited a tendency to focus more on the actions of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, whom he believed to be the Antichrist. However, contrary to Salimbene's prediction of Frederick II's death in 1260, the emperor actually passed away in 1250. Nevertheless, he did not completely abandon his understanding of the Crusades based on Gioacchino’s teachings and continued to interpret the Crusades through the lens of Gioacchino’s thoughts. Therefore, Salimbene's Crusade perception and records in Cronica demonstrate a discrepancy with actual events due to the strong influence of Gioacchino’s ideas. Nevertheless, Salimbene's Cronica still serves as an important tool for gaining a deeper understanding of thirteenth-century medieval Christendom, including the negative response of the followers of Gioacchino against the Crusades towards the Holy Land, in which he lived.
