초록

This study began with a critical mind that “Missing” (2016) is a film that constructed a multi-layered narrative about ethnic Koreans living in China, who are the others in the established Korean society. The characters in “Missing,” Korean woman, Jisun and Korean Chinese woman, Hanmae are both women who are subalterns under the global Neoliberalist/capitalist economic system and the traditional conventions of patriarchy. The women endeavored to understand each other’s position as if they mirror the other’s circumstances, and accordingly, they were described as beings who would be able to shoot out a sense of solidarity. However, “Missing” listed the “image of ethnic Koreans living in China,” again, which has repeatedly been reproduced by Korean films, and consequently, Hanmae remained a character with a limitation, who could not break away from the stereotype of Korean Chinese women. In modern society, stereotype images implying racial, ethnic and national differences have continuously produced, and the conventional behavior in which mainstream people in the society exclude people in a minority group has firmly been maintained. Like this, the public that indiscreetly took specific images and discourses about the other, constructed by a society, without reflection differentiate themselves from the others and construct a racial hierarchy through a deeply internalized concept. In this context, Hanmae in “Missing” just remained a being with a limitation, who accepted the cultural order, as a Korean Chinese woman and ended up serving as an assistant of a Korean middle-class elite woman, though she could have banded together, reaching out her hand, in terms of the issue in the dimension of gender. Like this, through a ‘slanted’ sense of solidarity in “Missing” formed between compassion and differentiation, we know that it is never easy to reproduce the other’s life and history ethically, which needs close attention.
