Abstract

This article extracts from Plato’s discussion of courage a specifically Platonic principle that defines a just war. Through a Socratic dialogical exploration of what risks a courageous person takes and endures and what knowledge renders this endurance wise and virtuous, the Protagoras and the Laches imply that courage entails an attitude of enduring the risks of imperfect truths. This pertains to individuals and citizens of a state who must continue their lives despite lacking complete understanding or perfection in their knowledge of good and evil, for they have nothing else to rely on to act. While this incomplete knowledge necessarily reduces courage as a virtue in part rather than in its entirety, even such partial virtue can only be achieved by individuals who are dedicated to caring for both their own and others' care of truths. We can extend this Platonic theory of courage to a theory about just war that harmonizes with the virtue of courage to suggest that as long as our collective way of life as a nation involves nurturing virtue, a war that preserves our freedom to continue this way of life can simultaneously be deemed a just war that safeguards our excellence. We reconfirm Plato’s distinctively philosophical theory of just war, which requires the individual lives and the political system dedicated to virtue, in his Menexenus, a pseudo-eulogistic funeral oration for the war dead.
