Abstract

This article is a critical examination on Isocrates’ teaching of speech (paideia tôn logôn) and his writing in terms of civic education. Isocrates’ school was not for ordinary citizens, but for a select few. He tried to train his pupils to be rhetorical men (rhêtorikos), prudent (pronimos), reasonable and equitable (epieikeis), who could bring about an agreement on political issues by means of speech (logos), providing persuasive opinions (doxa) most appropriate to the critical time (kairos). After trained under his distinguished instruction, his pupils played important roles in their own cities respectively. It was inevitable for Isocrates’ school to be institution for elite education in Athens because it was very difficult for an ordinary citizen to enter his school and become a leader of the society. However, I believe that it is still possible to consider his education as a civic one. The reason is that his epideictic speeches were not exclusive to his own students. For instance, his Panegyricus was open to all the citizens in the Athenian public festival. His treatises offered good opportunity for all the Athenian citizens to look at the future of the city (polis). He urged them to retrieve their past glory, and to recover a true sense of community. With respect to political issues, his work was even more accessible and understandable than any other complex theories of professional philosophers. He was aware that, in reality, not all the citizens could become social leaders. However, he hoped them at least to be prudent citizens who could distinguish good leaders from bad ones, and make a good decision for public welfare, not merely for their own interest. In this perspective, we may argue that Isocrates was engaged in a civic education.
