Abstract
It is Dionysus who is the most important god in the myth of Orphic religion, but Orpheus himself worshipped Apollo and his followers also lived an apollonian life. This paper presents this twofold features of Orphic religion, and then, explains the reason why Orpheus can be called as a religious reformer and how his followers are distinguished from the popular worshippers of traditional Dionysus. For this, I focus on ōmophagia, ‘eating animal’s raw flesh’, which was included not only in the traditional Dionysian rite but also in the Orphic rite, and I give an interpretation that the traditional ōmophagia would symbolize the encouragement of activating our primitive instinct but the Orphic one the warning against it. On these grounds, I specify the features of religious reformation found in Orphic religion.
