Abstract
By the fifth century B. C., two distinct conceptions of education and areté emerged. The Sophists departed from traditional ideas about education. Plato was the first thinker who formulated a model of the meaning of education and its role in society. Like Plato, Isocrates fell under the influence of the Sophists, but he criticized them for their emphases on rhetorical display and technique at the expense of character ideals. The Isocrates’ view of an educated man was another example of the persistent stream in classical Greek thought. The Isocrates’ orator was the sense of the completeness of man in general. His concern was the preparation of man who might live and act actively and successfully in the changing conditions of society. He really aimed at what was good, permanent, and universal in Greek culture, especially as it was found in Athens. Generally speaking, it was the universal striving after intellectual possession and wisdom. Though the aim of Isocrates’ rhetoric education was mastery of speech and expression, his eloquence was responsible to its actual content. In his hand, rhetoric is gradually transformed into ethics. “True words, words in conformity with justice, are images of a good and trustworthy soul.” For Isocrates, an educated man is “one who can deal with all that comes upon him day by day: who is honest and mannerly to society: who rules his desires: who is not spoiled by good fortune.” He wanted that his educated man should be a good and efficient man in his relation to society and the state. He especially has exerted a great influence on posterity in two areas, prose composition and education.
