Abstract

In 380 B.C. Isocrates published a speech Panēgurikos, which was delivered in the panhellenic festival at Olymphia. In this speech, his political idea ‘Panhellenism’ was clearly presented for the first time. He advised the Greeks to give up their animosity toward each other and join in a unified military expedition against Persia. In the question of leadership of the unified campaign, Isocrates asserted Athens’ superiority. In bringing forwards the reasons, he said “Our city (=Athens) revealed philosophy.” What is the philosophy that Athens revealed to the world? To give an answer to this question is the aim of my article. Maybe many people bring to mind immediately traditional philosophy that was considered as begun by Socrates, and succeeded and developed by Plato and Aristotle. But this idea seems to be anachronical and out of the historical context, because Isocrates consistently criticized Plato’s philosophy as useless in Greek political life. For that reason, the ‘Athens’ philosophy’ is neither Socrates’ philosophy that Plato succeeded, nor Aristotle’s Philosophy that succeeded Plato’s one. The Pre-Socratic natural philosophy and the Sophists’ philosophy are not ‘Athens’ philosophy’ because they were not Athenians. In the Panēgurikos, it is difficult to find out an answer to whose philosophy is exactly the philosophy that Athens revealed. What we can do now is to reconstruct the ‘Athens’ philosophy’ from the philosophy that Isocrates realized in his education and showed in his speeches, on the supposition that Isocrates succeeded faithfully the ‘Athens’ philosophy’.
