Abstract
Aristotle’s concept of voluntariness (to hekousion) has been discussed mainly in connection with a theory of moral responsibility, focusing on the Nicomachean Ethics. In this paper, I approach the discussion of voluntariness in the Eudemian Ethics in terms of the generation or production of virtue. In view of Aristotle’s theory that the virtue of character is not given by nature or chance, but made through voluntary actions of the agent, voluntariness emerges as a condition for the possibility of moral maturity before it becomes a precondition for moral evaluation. In particular, I attempt to elucidate the concept of voluntariness by means of the concept of efficient cause based on the claim that the agent is the controlling principle or cause for the generation of voluntary action. An individual man as the agent turns out to be an efficient cause of voluntary action, to which is attributed a sort of causal responsibility, whereby ‘action’ (praxis) as a technical term means action based on rational thinking. Against the interpretation that in Aristotle’s theory of action causal responsibility has nothing to do with moral responsibility, I argue that in the case of voluntary action according to choice (prohairesis) moral or ethical responsibility is a theoretical consequence of causal responsibility. Besides, I oppose the claim that the concept of voluntariness in the Eudemian Ethics is the same as the one in the Nicomachean Ethics by pointing out some significant differences concerning the definitions of voluntariness and involuntariness and the analysis of the so-called mixed action between the two sister works of Aristotle’s ethics. In the light of Aristotle’s concept of voluntariness, I finally address the question of what it means to become a mature moral subject, that is, an adult in the moral sense.
