스포츠경기에서 우승자는 탁월성을 통해 이해된다. 그리고 이러한 탁월성을 완성하기 위해 선수들은 '노력'이라는 실천적 행위를 우선순위에 둔다. 그러나 여기에는 예외적인 변인이 존재한다. 그것은 바로 운이라는 요소이다. 본 연구에서는 우승이라는 값진 결과가 운을 통해 해석이 가능할 것으로 보고, 아리스토텔레스의 사상을 중심으로 분석하였다. 아리스토텔레스에 따르면, 운은 자신의 의지와는 상관없이 본성적이고 우연적으로 발생되는 것으로서 허구가 아니라 현실성을 지닌다. 모든 선수가 우승 혹은 자신의 목표를 위해 노력을 한다고 가정하여 볼 때, 신체적 조건이나 환경적 여건은 경기력 향상에 영향을 미치고, 이는 결국 경기결과와도 관련된다. 이러한 관점에서 본다면, 탁월한 신체적·환경적 요소를 지닌 선수는 그렇지 못한 선수보다 유리한 조건에서 경기에 임할 수 있는 운 좋은 선수라고 할 수 있다. 스포츠가 탁월성 발현의 장이라고 할 때, 스포츠경기 우승자는 곧 탁월한 선수라고 이해되어 왔지만 결국 운의 영향을 배제할 수 없다는 결론에 이른다. 그럼에도 불구하고 아리스토텔레스의 사상에 근거하여 볼 때, 분명한 것은 운과 노력이 인간의 행복에 영향을 미치는 것은 사실지만 노력에 의한 행복 추구에 더 큰 의미가 부여된다는 것이다.
Abstract
In this paper, I analyze what it means to be a deserving or meritorious winner in sport. The winner in sport competition is defined as excellence accomplished by effort. However, there is an exceptional variable to understand the meaning of winner instead of effort that is luck or chance. To analyze the fact of winning in sport game, I focus on luck through Aristotle's works 『Nichomachean Ethics』and 『Physics』. It is in Aristo tle's concept of luck that is irregular, exceptional and out of control by human beings as it is spontaneous happenings in reality and not a mere fiction. The environmental and individual factors athletes having are the important variable for winning if all athletes are achieving their own goal by devoted effort. In this point, if an athlete has the superior physical or environmental conditions than opponent, the athlete is lucky who stands closer to possible way for winning. Accordingly, it emphasizes luck effect in reality in sport as well. Nevertheless, it is manifest that happiness as a result of one's own exertions than by the gift of fortune is, as Aristotle insists, virtue to achieve excellence.
