Abstract
There is difficulty when it is said in K 7 that there is "a science of being qua being and separate." Being qua being is proclaimed the object of the "Philosopher's science", in the K 3 and this is implied again in the K 7. This science is a universal and not a special science. Universal in the sense that its object is predicable of everything and is found in every category. It is ontology. Ontology is developed in K 4-6. "Separate" is the attribute of the object of theology, a special kind of theoretical science, hence kata meros kai ou katholou. Consequently, the science which has being qua being and separate for its object, is ontology and theology, but it cannot be either one alone. How is such a mixed science possible? In the classification of science there is no place for it. The difficulty lies in the combination of two heterogeneous characteristics, "qua being and separate." In this article firstly I am going to consider the concept of science with regard to the distinction between general and special science in order to solve this problem. Secondly examining the different interpretation of scholars on this passage I will argue how to deal with this problem. Ontology is a universal science in that its object is "the most universal", because being is predicated of each and every thing. Theology is universal in a quite different sense. its object directly or indirectly sets all other things in motion. Thus identity of ontology and theology on the ground of their universality is inadmissible. The result reached in this K chapter regarding the relation between the two sciences is that they are essentially different, but incidentally the same.
