Abstract
Aristotle presents the ‘practical syllogism’ in order to explain voluntary actions, and it has inspired various issues in ethics and theory of action. One of these inspirations is the view that the practical syllogism is the deliberation, which is advocated by those who want to formalize Aristotle’s phronēsis and deliberation. They base their claim largely on two references, and I will examine them closely and show that these are not sufficient for their claim. For this purpose, in chapter 2, I’ll clarify what we refer to as the practical syllogism. In chapter 3, I will examine two texts about practical syllogism, which seem to describe deliberations. Through this examination, it will be revealed that deliberation does not apply to the particular premise of practical syllogism. Thus, we should not identify the practical syllogism with the deliberation. For the next chapter, I will give a clear view about the practical syllogism; It explains voluntary actions through two premises, which represent respectively the desiderative faculty and the cognitive faculty. The view that the practical syllogism is the deliberation cannot capture the whole implication of voluntary action. Nevertheless, I don’t utterly deny the possibilities of understanding practical matters syllogistically or applying the syllogism to the deliberation. I only want to give a ground for these possibilities by clarifying the practical syllogism’s role and meaning.
