이 글은 아리스토텔레스와 에픽테토스의 프로하이레시스론을 ‘우리에게 달려있는 것’[eph’ hēmin] 개념과 관련해서 고찰한다. 두 철학자 모두에게서 프로하이레시스는 우리에게 달려있는 것과 밀접히 연결되어 있는 것으로 제시된다. 하지만 이 두 개념이 연관되는 방식은 두 사람에게서 미묘하지만 중요한 차이점을 노정하고 있다. 이 글에서는 이 차이를 인과적 효력과 전적인 통제가능성의 구분을 통해 설명한다. 마지막으로 이 글은 에픽테토스가 프로하이레시스를 재도입한 동기가 스토아적 운명론과 도덕적 책임의 양립가능성을 둘러싼 철학적 논쟁과 관련되어 있다는 입장을 비판적으로 검토한다.
Abstract
This article discusses the concept of prohairesis in Aristotle and Epictetus in relation to that of being up to us[eph’ hēmin]. In both philosophers prohairesis is explained as closely associated with what is up to us. But there are some significant differences in the ways in which these two concepts are interconnected. This article focuses in particular on the fact that while in Aristotle what is up to us represents causal efficacy, in Epictetus total controllability. The final chapter examines critically the position that Epictetus’ reintroduction of prohairesis as a central philosophical concept is motivated by the controversy over the compatibility of Stoic fatalism and moral responsibility.
