Abstract

Aristotle begins his discussion of akrasia (weakness of will) with the remark that it is one of the moral characters to be avoided. Nevertheless he seems not to discuss in which way the akrasia could be avoided. It may be one of the reasons why Aristotle’s discussion of the problem looks disappointing. However, the problem of akrasia has established a long and far‐reaching tradition with different conceptions and broader understandings than Aristotle’s own. To bring the understandings and assumptions of this broader context into the evaluation of Aristotle’s discussion of akrasia uncritically may produce some difficulties. This article discusses three points that help us distinguish Aristotle’s own problems and contexts from the understanding of broader tradition. (1) Aristotle’s akrasia is not a problem that all men universally experience everyday. It is a rather a character (hexis) to be found in the minority. (2) Aristotle’s akrasia is not a phenomenon that needs a further explanation for its cause. It provides rather an explanation of why in some people the practical syllogism does not work. (3) Aristotle’s akrasia is not a fundamental flaw of human nature that can be only cured by the divine grace. As a character that preserves still the highest part of man, the fundamental principle (arche), akrasia is curable in principle, and lies within the range of possible human nature. Understan ding precisely Aristotle’s own problems and contexts in his discussion of akrasia, may contribute to finding out the direction, in which the seemingly disappointing feature of his discussion could be dissolved.
