본 연구는 어머니 여성의 젠더화된 아비투스가 지리적 공간, 구체적으로는 자녀 양육 및 경력 유지의 공간적 타협을 통해 구성되고 있음을 강조하며, ‘소문자 강남’을 젠더화되고 공간화된 아비투스의 구성체로서 바라보고자 한다. ‘소문자 강남’이 중산층 대열에 합류하고자 하는 비강남 거주자들의 욕망이 실현되는 공간이라는 기존의 논의를 확장하여, 욕망 실현을 위해 어머니 여성이 전략적으로 선택한 공간이면서도 젠더화된 노동을 공고히 하며이들의 고군분투를 가중시키는 아이러니한 속성을 규명한다. 젠더화된 아비투스는 어머니여성이 대도시에서 자신과 가정의 존속을 위해 소문자 강남을 찾아 나서게 하는데, 이때 소문자 강남은 어머니 여성의 직업 활동과 자녀 교육 관리자 역할을 위한 전략적 대안으로 활용된다. 소문자 강남은 ‘대문자 강남’의 생활양식을 모방한 일원화된 성격으로 정의될 수없으며, 소문자 강남을 지향하는 욕구 또한 강남이라는 허상을 좇는 중산층들의 허영이나투기적 시민성이라고 단순화할 수 없다. 본 연구는 소문자 강남이 다양한 욕망과 가치, 타협의 산물임을 경험연구를 통해 드러내며, 강남화라는 한국적 도시성 논의를 확장하는 데기여하고자 한다.
Abstract
This study examines how the gendered habitus of mother-women is constituted through spatial compromises in childrearing and career maintenance, and conceptualizes “lowercase Gangnam” as an assemblage of gendered and spatialized habitus. While previous studies have defined lowercase Gangnam as a space where non-Gangnam residents pursue their desire to join the middle class, this study extends the discussion by identifying its paradoxical nature: it is a space strategically chosen by mother-women to advance such aspirations, yet one that simultaneously reinforces gendered labor and intensifies their struggles. Gendered habitus compels mother-women to seek lowercase Gangnam as a strategic alternative for both professional work and the management of children’s education within the metropolis. Lowercase Gangnam cannot be reduced to a homogeneous imitation of uppercase Gangnam, nor can the desire for it be dismissed as mere vanity or speculative citizenship of the middle class. Based on empirical research, this study reveals lowercase Gangnam as a product of diverse desires, values, and compromises, thereby contributing to the ongoing debate on Gangnamization and its implications for Korean urbanism.
